Infront of a great crowd with tons of hard hitting, big plays and last minute heroics. The Duo Sports Thundercats captured their second straight Super 8 Championship and are now Back to Back Champions. In a back and forth game between the leagues top 2 teams it was everything you would want in a championship game. The Diablos Ensenada came in with a 5-1* record, with their only loss a forfeit loss in the last week of the regular season to rest before play-offs. The Diablos came in with the #1 Defense in the league only allowing 32 points total the entire regular season and the league’s #2 offense. The Duo Sports Thundercats came in with a 4-2 record and with the league’s #1 offense as well as #2 Defense. The game started out back and forth with a duel between the leagues top 2 QB’s as the Diablos struck first on a TD pass from Julin Malagamba and after a missed PAT the Diablos led 6-0. The Thundercats answered with a TD pass from Justin Mc Kenzie to Phillip Williams and a 2 point conversion to take the lead 8-6. After a rouge on an interception the Diablos cut the lead to 8-7 and then the second quarter began. The real fireworks started at the beginning of the second quarter and from that point out it became a shootout. Julin finished with 4 TD passes and 3 interceptions, the Diablos ran in 2 scores on the ground, and former Thundercat Ceasar “Pollo” Vazquez returned a kick off along with conversions and a couple of rouges to amass 54 points for the Diablos. On this day however 54 points would not be enough as the Thundercats and their #1 ranked offense just kept rolling, QB Justin Mc Kenzie connected on 6 TD passes and ran for two more as well as completed several conversions and the defense came up with a rouge to amass 57 points, a Mc Kenzie to Brandon Arnold Pass was the apparent game winner in the enzone with 3 seconds left but the referee declared that Arnold’s own momentum carried him out of the endzone and they marked the ball at the 1 yardline. With 3 seconds to go the Thundercats in empty formation snapped the ball for the last play of the game, QB Justin Mc Kenzie sprinted right to avoid the blitzing Diablo LB an as the defense converged at the last second floated a pass over the middle to a wide open Phillip Williams for his third score on the day and the game winner, 57-54 Thundercats over Diablos for the Super 8 Championship. The Thundercat WR corps was huge on the day 4 different recievers hauled in Mc Kenzie TD passes (Phillip Williams, Daniel White, Brandon Arnold, and Richard Osuna), and accounted for most of the yards as starting TB Didier Valdez suffered a shoulder injury in the first half and could not continue. The Diablos offense was explosive early on but crucial turnovers in the second half halted their march to the championship. It was a great game by both teams and the crowd absolutely loved it. The Super 8 would also like to thank the television show Crossing South who came out and doing the pre game interviews and getting involved with shooting some of the action.
